A few weeks ago, A and I were lying in bed around 11PM when we noticed something that sounded an awful lot like rain. We looked out the windows and sure enough, the ground was wet. We were pretty ecstatic considering we're currently in a really severe drought. Suddenly A shouted, "Oh crap, my comics!" after realizing she'd left her long cardboard box of comics outside on the patio. She threw on her boots and brought the slightly moist box inside. We laid back down to listen the sweet patters of rain until I noticed something wet hit me.
"Oh no," I said as I looked up to see a small droplet forming at the corner of the roof vent. I wiped it off. Another formed.
I was overcome with dismay that the woman who'd sold the trailer to us said that the roof did not leak and was in fact waterproof because it was fiberglass. I'm going to assume she didn't know and not that she willingly lied to us. I had a tarp that we could have used but it was in the storage compartment underneath my trunk and there were a bunch of boxes on top of it. Instead, we bounded outside in boots and pajamas and grabbed the paint drop cloth that had been placed on the patio when I was painting the garden beds. It had been on the gravelly ground and was already wet so it made a fairly impressive mess when we lifted it up and shook it out. I stood on the patio table and hefted it up as much as I could and tossed it over the roof of the trailer. A went around to the other side and climbed on the ladder that was propped up against its side. My paracord was in my car and I didn't feel like unraveling my watchband (which is braided paracord) so I looked around the trailer for larger rocks to weigh down the tarp. With about ten biscuit-sized rocks we weighed down the tarp and climbed back into bed. Thankfully the leaking had stopped.
It's been about two weeks since then and I've replaced the paint plastic with my backpacking tarp. As soon as we have time we're going to go on the roof and attempt to recaulk the vents. Ideally we'd like to replace them all (since two are cracked) but I haven't had the time or energy to research replacement vent covers.
Additionally, as soon as I can figure out how to upload files from A's camcorder to my laptop I'm going to finally post the video from our garden. We've got a pretty nice garden going and sprouts are starting to come up. I'm very excited.
I'm sorry I haven't been posting as frequently. It's hard when we only have one day a week to tackle big projects. More will always be in store.
